Dawn Redwood Care & Description

General Description:

The Dawn Redwood was thought be extinct for years only being found through ancient fossils, but in 1948 it was “rediscovered” China and later brought to the USA. They are fascinating bonsai specimen for every bonsai enthusiast as they are one of nature’s astounding wonders. The Dawn Redwood has beautiful feather-like foliage and a formal, upright style which is both visually powerful and majestic. During the winter months, the tree’s foliage will begin to brown and shed, as it is a deciduous tree. Please be sure you check out our full selection of wholesale bonsai trees for sale from our online nursery after you have fully researched the Dawn Redwood Bonsai Tree.

In the wild, (when they are not contained to pots) a Dawn Redwood can easily reach heights of over 100 feet. These bonsai trees are impressive in both size and stature, with a tapering trunk with reddish bark that is broad at the base. You will love this tree – everyone does!

Watering:

The Dawn Redwood Bonsai Tree prefers moist, deep, and soil that drains well. How do you know if the soil is moist enough? Gently press the soil with you finger so test for wetness. Make sure the soil has a good amount of moisture – these trees are not drought tolerant!

Lighting:

The Dawn Redwood Bonsai Tree will grow best if kept in outside in the full sun, but people have also successfully grown the tree indoors by providing them with abundant amounts of sunlight and providing a humid environment.

Temperature:

The Dawn Redwood Bonsai prefers to be kept in moderate warmth with generous levels of humidity. During the hottest weeks of summer, be sure to water regularly and keep the soil moist. During the winter, bring the bonsai into your garage if there is danger of frost. You want the tree to go through its dormant cycle, but try not to let the root system freeze!

Fertilizing:

We recommend that you fertilize the Dawn Redwood every 3 weeks in between the late spring and late summer with a well-balanced organic fertilizer, such as Osmocote 14-14-14.  We do not recommend adding fertilizer during the fall.

Trimming:

The Dawn Redwood usually is trained and trimmed in the upright formal style. If you choose to wire the tree, be sure to do so in the dormant period from winter to early spring.
